ANN ARBOR, MI — The new year is here, bringing with it good intentions and a plethora of resolutions. For adventurous eaters or the climate-focused, this may include Veganuary.

Veganuary is a challenge to eat vegan for the month of January as way to try out the lifestyle without a long-term commitment. But vegan newbies may be stumped on where to eat out at places without animal products.

For those eating vegan this January, here are five great plant-based restaurants and bakeries in Ann Arbor.

Detroit Street Filling Station

With a menu featuring buffalo cauliflower wings and tempeh burgers, Detroit Street Filling Station has something for everyone.

The menu incudes options like The Del Burger, which features a tempeh patty by The Brinery, melted Violife cheddar cheese, and herb aioli.

Those looking to add a little jazz to their vegan food experience can head over to North Star Lounge, the sister venue of Detroit Street Filling Station. The lounge, which is inspired by the New Orleans music scene, claims to be the first vegan bar in Michigan.

The menu includes barbeque jackfruit sliders, galette pastries, seasoned popcorn, pasta salad and a variety of desserts. Beer, wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic mixed drinks are available.

North Star Lounge, 301 N. Fifth Ave., is open 5 to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with live music playing 7 to 10 p.m. Find the restaurant online or on social media.

Cinnaholic opens first Michigan location in Ann Arbor

For something on the sweeter side, Cinnaholic offers a vegan cinnamon roll menu. The bakery serves “build your own” cinnamon rolls with options like peanut butter or coffee frosting and brownie bites and cookie dough for toppings.

Cinnaholic’s menu is entirely vegan, including its sugar, which is not filtered with bone char.

Botanical Bakeshop keeps the sweet tooth going with elevated vegan baked goods. The menu features cakes, pastries and other goods with the eggs and dairy swapped out for replacements based in aquafaba and lentils.

From meatball subs to pesto pasta, Vegano Italiano offers exclusively vegan Italian food. Although the restaurant launched in a brick-and-mortar location in Ypsilanti, it recently transitioned to a food truck.

The current menu includes cauliflower wings, macaroni and cheese and the meatball sub. The winter menu will also include pesto pasta and penne a la vodka.
