These Clean eating Tacos look a bit like junk food, but they’re a really good meal to feed your family when you first make the move to eating clean. They’re what I would call a fun food, the kids love putting their own toppings on them and choosing what they’re going to have. They’re a little messy, which is fine, they’re impossible to be eaten gracefully and what kid doesn’t love messy, hands covered in food sort of food?
Clean Eating Tacos
Many Taco recipes are pretty Clean to start with, but making them at home means I can make sure the meat I use is Organic or at least Happy Meat and no sweeteners have been added to the Taco sauce, as they are in some store bought sauces.
I make these Tacos on a frequent basis: They’re very easy to make whilst being a proper crowd pleaser. I also make these ahead of time, making the sauce so it’s ready to be reheated and served when I need it.
I buy Organic Taco shells from my local Supermarket. Check the ingredients, they should be something like: Corn, oil, salt. If I don’t have any Taco shells, I’ve also used fresh homemade Tortilla instead and they work beautifully. My kids prefer the crunch you get with the Taco shells, so they’re the first choice, and as long as the ingredients are few and simple, and recognisable :)
Kid Friendly Tacos
My kids view Tacos as take out food, and I’m not going to put them straight. I’m not sure why, but they lump Tacos into the same group as some of the take out food we used to eat so while they see me making them and have helped to make them, they get eaten as if they’re a treat!
I keep the sauce really simple. There’s nothing for the kids to complain about – I don’t even use onions here as they’d get picked out one by one by my youngest, and one of the older ones wouldn’t be too happy about them either. I sometimes add a diced red pepper while cooking, sometimes not, but I always prepare several different salad type options for them to have as toppings.
I used to buy the Supermarket variety Taco Seasoning, but now I just make up my own – without the preservatives. Here is the recipe for my Clean Eating Taco Seasoning. It’s easier than you think, so give it a go. It is enough for around one batch of beef or chicken mince, so easily feeds a family 4 – 6.
